De plus, les données ayant servi à l’élaboration du présent document pourront être utilisées comme valeurs de référence pour les comparaisons avec les relevés futurs de colonies d’oiseaux de mer, de manière à mesurer les effets des changements dans la composition, l’abondance et/ou la répartition des proies, ainsi que les changements climatiques et océanographiques.</idPurp>

La présence de nombreuses colonies de nidification d’oiseaux de mer en Colombie-Britannique a été établie il y a plus de 50 ans mais en raison de l’éloignement des sites, ces colonies ont rarement été visitées. La majorité des données sont issues d’inventaires exhaustifs des oiseaux de mer coloniaux qui nichent le long du littoral de la Colombie-Britannique, réalisés entre 1974 et 1977 par le British Columbia Provincial Museum (BCPM; aujourd’hui le Royal British Columbia Museum) et entre 1980 et 1989 par le Service canadien de la faune (SCF) d’Environnement et Changement climatique Canada. L’objectif des relevés du BCPM était d’explorer toute la côte de la Colombie-Britannique afin d’y repérer les sites de nidification des oiseaux de mer. Des données quantitatives fiables ont été recueillies sur les populations reproductrices de toutes les espèces d’oiseaux de mer nichant à la surface du sol, et des estimations approximatives de la taille des populations ont été réalisées pour les espèces nichant dans un terrier. L’objectif du programme de relevés du SCF était d’établir des estimations de base des populations reproductrices d’espèces nichant dans un terrier en Colombie-Britannique en utilisant des techniques d’étude normalisées afin de permettre des comparaisons et le suivi de ces populations à l’avenir. Au cours des années 1980, des relevés répétés ciblant les espèces nichant à la surface du sol ont également été menés par le SCF dans la plupart des régions de la côte de la Colombie-Britannique. Quelques colonies situées sur de petites îles éloignées n’ont pas fait l’objet de visites lors de ces relevés. Par conséquent, pour certaines colonies, les estimations de population les plus récentes proviennent du premier relevé exhaustif du littoral de la Colombie-Britannique, réalisé par le Royal British Columbia Museum au milieu des années 1970. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style='margin:0 0 0 0;'&gt;&lt;span /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style='margin:0 0 0 0;'&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Depuis 1989, le SCF mène des relevés ciblant certaines colonies d’alcidés, de cormorans et de goélands le long de la côte de la Colombie-Britannique, et les résultats ont été inclus dans l’ensemble de données (la saisie des données est en cours). En plus des données des relevés effectués par le Service canadien de la faune, nous avons tenté d’obtenir des données récentes auprès de toutes les autres sources, notamment Parcs Canada, le ministère des Forêts, des Terres, de l’Exploitation des ressources naturelles et du Développement rural de la Colombie-Britannique, la Ville de Vancouver, la Bamfield Marine Station et la Laskeek Bay Conservation Society. Depuis l’an 2000, durant plusieurs années, Parcs Canada et ses partenaires (Réserve de parc national des Îles-Gulf, Réserve de parc national Pacific Rim et Réserve de parc national Gwaii Haanas) ont effectué d’autres inventaires des Huîtriers de Bachman nicheurs dans certains secteurs du littoral, et les résultats ont été intégrés à l’ensemble de données (la saisie des données est en cours).
